Welcome to the Camino Real Environmental Center! google earth map (opens in new window)
The Camino Real Landfill is an award-winning, environmentally progressive waste disposal facility located in Sunland Park, New Mexico. We employ some of the best minds in the industry, and serve as a living laboratory for university students from NMSU, UTEP, the University of Juarez, and the Universidad de Monterrey, Mexico.
The Camino Real Environmental Center includes
1) our 480-acre regional landfill;
2) a waste-to-energy power plant built by Four Peaks Energy of Santa Fe, generating electricity from the methane gas coming off the landfill; and
3) our recycling center accepting plastics, paper, metals, and cardboard.
The power plant at Camino is an exciting project, and adds a whole new dimension to managing solid waste. After you learn about converting waste-to-energy, you might start looking at landfills as sources of energy, instead of burial grounds for the garbage you toss out!
By touring our website, you’ll find information about our alternative energy program, the history of our facility, lining the landfill "cells", why we are an award-winning facility, how YOU impact the environment through the trash you create every day, how local Sunland Park students create their own “little landfills”, in the study of environmental science.
We're delighted you've dropped in to our website, and if you ever come to Sunland Park, New Mexico, please drop by the real Camino Real Landfill. We'd love to give you a real-life tour of our great facility!
