Welcome to The Camino Real Environmental Center! google earth map (opens in new window)
The Camino Real Landfill is an award-winning, environmentally progressive waste disposal facility located in Sunland Park, New Mexico. We employ some of the best minds in the industry, and serve as a living laboratory for university students from NMSU, UTEP, the University of Juarez, and the Universidad de Monterrey, Mexico.
Currently, we are tackling the challenge of generating electricity from decomposing trash. It's an exciting concept, and adds a whole new dimension to managing solid waste. After you visit here, you might start looking at a landfill as a source of energy, instead of a dead-end for the garbage you toss out!
By touring our website, you can get information about the "waste to energy" program, the history of our facility, how we line the landfill "cells", why we are an award-winning facility, how YOU impact the environment through the trash you create every day, how local students in Sunland Park schools are building their own little landfills, and how teenagers in another part of our host community have declared themselves living in "the cleanest, safest community on the planet".
We're delighted you've dropped in to our website, and if you ever come to Sunland Park, New Mexico, please drop by the real Camino Real Landfill. We'd love to give you a real-life tour of our great facility!
